What Is Hormone Therapy for Men?

Hormones can significantly impact your overall wellness, affecting your memory, hair, sleep, and sexual function. On the cellular level, testosterone is the hormone that helps the body operate as expected. Low testosterone (or “Low T") issues can be the cause of a number of outward symptoms in men, such as anxiety, decreased libido, and loss of bone and muscle mass. Testosterone levels in men begin dropping in their 20s, and most noticeably into the 40s and 50s, Doctors have started referring to this as “andropause”, or the male equivalent to menopause. At Thiesen MD, we offer customized bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) treatments for men to restore testosterone levels and combat the unwanted side effects of hormone imbalances. Contact the Thiesen MD team today to book a consultation.

What Should I Expect During Hormone Therapy?

During your consultation at one of our New England offices, our team will complete a blood test to determine your hormone levels. Once we receive the results of the test, the Thiesen MD team will create a personalized treatment plan to address any deficiencies found in your hormone levels. We will then send your treatment plan to the compounding pharmacy, where your bioidentical hormone therapy supplements will be carefully crafted to mimic the hormone structure naturally produced by your body.

Pellets are the preferred method of hormone replacement delivery at Thiesen MD. Small pellets, roughly the size of a grain of rice, are placed in fatty tissue of the buttocks or lower back area. To develop the pellet we use for men, we use organic yams as the precursor to the testosterone. The  BHRT pellet is 99.5% pure yam-hormone. The other 0.5% is composed of stearic acid that holds the pellet together in its proper form, but is not absorbed at all into your system. The purity of yam-hormone is crucial because it ensures the reliability and safety of bioidentical hormone preparations. The unique design and structure of our BHRT pellet implant allows them to last for several months and provide a substantial and stable release of hormones into the body.

BHRT is generally well-tolerated and minimally painful, with some individuals reporting only mild discomfort or bruising that quickly resolves.

Am I a Good Candidate for HRT?

Hormone replacement therapy is commonly administered to help patients who are suffering from decreased or imbalanced hormone amounts. Typically, these concerns are frequent in men who are at least 40 years old and finding differences in their mood, sexual desire, weight, and mental clarity. These issues may additionally occur in females younger than 50 who have undergone a total hysterectomy. A hormone imbalance could lead to many different health issues, like erectile dysfunction, abnormal thyroid, elevated cholesterol levels, nighttime sweats, difficulty sleeping, and memory problems.

About Us
How can I tell if my hormones are imbalanced?

Hormonal imbalances can present in men with various symptoms that may impact physical and emotional well-being. Common symptoms of imbalanced hormones in men are decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, unexplained weight gain or loss, mood swings, and muscle loss. At our North Reading, MA, Bourne, MA, or Cranston, RI locations, we offer custom hormone replacement therapy plans to address hormonal imbalances in men for improved overall health and quality of life.

Can hormone therapy cause cancer?

At Thiesen MD, we conduct thorough evaluations and consider each patient's medical history, current health status, and specific hormonal needs before recommending BHRT. The relationship between hormone replacement therapy and prostate cancer is a complex and evolving area of research. Studies have suggested that increasing the levels of testosterone can promote existing prostate cancer but does not cause cancer. On the contrary, hormone replacement therapy has been used as a treatment for prostate cancer.
